Cardinal places emphasis on succession planning and progression of its staff by ensuring they have all the tools required to develop within in their roles and the company.

HR Specialist, Anna Pynenburg-Smith explains “We have numerous programs for our staff to be involved in, such as our Graduate Program, Mentoring and the Cardinal School of Development, which assists with internal recruitment and progression. Our school of development is a comprehensive program which includes 15 modules that are trained to our staff from roles of storepeople, to leading hands, supervisors and on to departmental managers.”

As well as training and development, staff recognition is another important part of the culture at Cardinal. A quarterly incentive scheme with cash rewards has been introduced for warehouse staff to encourage meeting Key Performance Indicators in Accuracy, Absenteeism and Cost per Case, which has increased performance of all teams since it has been introduced. There are also awards such as Employee of the Month (per site), end of year Annual Employee Awards, as well as employee engagement activities such as the Cardinal Wellness Challenge, pedometer challenge , shared lunches, Customer BBQ shouts, Cardinal sports teams and social club gatherings.
